The Drift Problem: Why AI Game Masters Forget

You've been playing for three sessions. Your rogue has a glass eye, a grudge against the Merchant's Guild, and an old contact named Farren who owes her a favor. Your AI Game Master has described that glass eye twice — once when she was interrogated by the city watch, once when she caught her reflection in a nobleman's mirror.

Session four. You're back in the city, asking around about a missing shipment. The AI narrates a scene with a contact at the docks. He glances at your rogue's "piercing blue eyes."

She doesn't have blue eyes. She has one glass eye.

This is drift — and if you've played more than a few sessions with an AI Game Master, you've felt it.

What Drift Actually Is

The term comes from the solo RPG community, and it describes something specific: the gradual erosion of established details across a session or across sessions. Your character's defining traits fade. NPC personalities soften and then vanish. The world's rules become suggestions that the AI ignores when it's convenient.

Drift is different from a single mistake. A single mistake is a typo, a slip, a momentary confusion. Drift is structural — it happens because of how general-purpose AI handles the information you've given it, not because of any one bad generation.

The solo RPG community has built precise vocabulary for the different ways this shows up:

Drift is the umbrella term — character consistency, setting details, and established facts eroding over time. Your glass-eyed rogue becomes blue-eyed. The tavern that burned down in session two is somehow open in session four. The guard captain who was bribed into looking away is back to full suspicion.

Hallucinating is when the AI generates story beats that flatly contradict what was established. Not just forgetting your rogue's eye — actively inventing that she testified before the council last month when no such thing happened. Hallucinations feel like playing with an unreliable narrator who's also gaslighting you.

Info-bleed is when details from one storyline contaminate another. You're running two quest threads simultaneously — a murder investigation and a smuggling job. The AI starts letting the smuggler's safe house address appear in dialogue about the murder suspect. NPCs reference the wrong plot. The contact who knows about the smuggling route mysteriously also knows about the murder victim. Threads bleed into each other until they're indistinguishable.

Reminding is the tax you pay to fight all of the above. Before each session, you paste in a summary. Before each scene, you reiterate the key facts. You start every conversation with "Remember: my character's name is Vessa, she has a glass eye, she was exiled from the Merchant's Guild for—" Reminding is constant maintenance work that keeps your story alive at the cost of immersion and momentum.

These aren't different problems. They're different symptoms of the same root cause.

Why General-Purpose AI Can't Hold a World

A language model processes text. When you have a conversation with ChatGPT, Claude, or any general-purpose AI assistant, everything that AI "knows" about your game exists in one place: the conversation history. That history is the entire world.

This creates a hard ceiling called the context window — the maximum amount of text the AI can process at once. When your conversation exceeds that window, older messages start getting dropped. The first things to go are usually the setup: your character's backstory, the world's geography, the early session recaps, the details you established in session one.

There's nothing the AI can do about this. It's not negligence; it's architecture. A general-purpose AI is designed to answer questions and complete tasks in a single conversation. It was never built to maintain a persistent fictional world across dozens of sessions and tens of thousands of words.

Some models handle this better than others. Longer context windows push the ceiling out. Instruction-following improvements help the AI prioritize your world-building over generic behavior. But all of these are partial mitigations. They don't solve drift — they slow it down.

The reminding cycle exists because players figured out this limitation and built manual workarounds. You keep the session notes. You paste the state summary at the start of each conversation. You've essentially become the AI's external hard drive, feeding it information it can't store itself.

The Architecture That Prevents Drift

A purpose-built AI Game Master approaches the problem differently. Instead of keeping world state in the conversation history, it keeps world state in a real database — one that persists between sessions and isn't subject to context window limits.

This shifts the fundamental model:

What the AI holds: Narrative intelligence. The ability to generate vivid, consistent prose, shape scenes, voice NPCs, and adapt the story to your choices in the moment.

What the database holds: Everything that needs to be remembered. Character sheets, NPC relationships, faction standings, quest states, location histories, past decisions and their consequences.

When you sit down for session four, the AI isn't relying on a pasted-in summary to remember that Farren owes your rogue a favor. That relationship is stored as structured data in the world record. The AI retrieves what's relevant to the current scene and writes from it.

The glass eye isn't in the conversation history. It's in Vessa's character record — and every narration that involves her appearance is grounded in that record.

What Happens to Hallucinations and Info-Bleed

Both problems shrink significantly when world state lives outside the conversation.

Hallucinations happen most often when the AI has incomplete information and fills in gaps with generated content that isn't grounded in your established world. With a persistent world layer, the AI isn't filling gaps — it's drawing from records. Vessa's testimony before the council never appears in narration because there's no testimony in her record. The AI can't invent it without contradicting data it has authoritative access to.

Info-bleed collapses when quest states are tracked separately. Two quest threads aren't just "context in the same conversation" — they're distinct records with distinct characters, locations, and status markers. The smuggler's safe house is in the smuggling record. The murder investigation is in the investigation record. The AI retrieves the right context for the right scene instead of pulling from an undifferentiated pool of text.

The Reminding Trap

One underappreciated cost of drift is what reminding does to you as a player.

Every time you paste in a session summary, you've already mentally shifted out of the fiction. You're thinking about what to include, whether the AI will retain it, whether you need to phrase it differently this time. You're managing the tool instead of playing the game.

Solo RPG is supposed to give you complete creative freedom — a story that moves at your pace, responds to your choices, and takes you somewhere you didn't expect. The reminding loop eats into that. Your mental overhead goes toward maintenance instead of play.

When the AI holds the world in memory, reminding becomes optional. You don't need to re-establish facts at the start of every session because those facts haven't gone anywhere. You start in the scene, not in the setup.

A More Honest Picture

The drift problem isn't solved perfectly by any tool today — including dedicated platforms. The question is whether drift is a fundamental limitation of the architecture or a manageable edge case.

For general-purpose AI, it's fundamental. The conversation history model can't persist state across sessions without manual intervention. The reminding cycle is the only available workaround, and it never fully works.

For purpose-built platforms, it's a much smaller problem. Structured world state handles the categories of drift that come from missing data. What remains is narration-level inconsistency — the AI occasionally misdescribing something it has correct records for — and that's a problem of generation quality rather than architecture.
